Thanks to the Captioners
The Deaf and hard-of-hearing communities join NCRA in thanking the captioners who worked so hard to bring them the continuous coverage following the September 11th terrorist attack on the World Trade Center and Pentagon.
| I just wanted to take the opportunity to say thank you. These past few days, I have realized as never before how much we who are deaf or hard-of-hearing owe to the captioners who provide what is our only access to understanding the media news (apart from newspapers). Without your work, we would have had only terrifying images, and no words that would interpret for us what those images were all about. So, to you and through you, I would like to say to all those captioners here in Canada and in the USA who have been working long hard hours, a big Thank You for keeping people like me informed.
Thanks, Sharon |
| On behalf of the Say What Club, National disability Part, Deaf and Hard of Hearing persons across America, we express our gratitude and many thanks for your efforts in captioning to help us be a part of what has happened.

| I want to add my thank you for the captioning of the attack on America. I am retired and my husband woke me up to look at the TV and tried to tell me what was being said. I thought, my TV has Captions, and ran to turn it on and sure enough Dan Rathers was using captions. I could only think of how hard it was for the Court Reporters to do this. I have no Idea who paid them, but they kept the Captions coming for five days or more and helped all of us who do not hear to read what was happening to America. I have a Court Reporter who Captions for me when I want to know what is going on. I am sure she helped during this time. It is really wonderful to look at the TV and know what is going on.
Love, and Thank you.

| I think it would be great if collectively everyone that wishes to, sends a word of thanks. Paul uses closed captioning. I was very impressed that the news of the tragic events were able to go to everyone.
Captioning is so important, I am glad that many TVs have it built in now. I think a lot of companies that even put cc in their commercials.

| Dear Randy and NDP and Ms. Schmidt:
It is cheering indeed to read of the support for captioning as central to communication, (another virtual on-ramp connecting us all).
Your enthusiasm spreads warmth over us all, and Jacqueline Schmidt's letter too is so very upbeat and encouraging.
I join in sending a big *attaguy* your way Randy, your perseverance really does pay off and inspires.
My keyboard still lacks an exclamation point, or you'd sure get one ...

| Tammie [Shedd],
You did a marvelous job. Glad that the captions move up a little bit so we are able to read what the stations put there like the name of the announcer, places and so forth. Keep up and well-done job! Thanks a million!

| To all of you who worked and are still working tirelessly to provide closed captioning on television for the Deaf and hard of hearing, my appeciation and thanks. You have enabled us to follow this national nightmare, to be able to understand what our President and other leaders are saying, to know what is going on.
No words can adequately express the heartfelt gratitude I feel for what you are doing. I am old enough to remember JFK's assassination and the assassinations of his brother Robert and Martin Luther King, and I well know the feelings of frustration and fear that watching events and news but not hearing or understanding gives. Now, thanks to you who give so much of yourselves, I am able to absorb the news as it happens. You are among the heroes of this tragedy. God bless you all!
Sincerely, Anne Mountain View, CA

| I would like very much to say thank you for the outstanding job that your captioners have done in covering the non-stop broadcasts related to last weeks terrorist attacks on our nation.
Please be sure that the captioners know that their hard work is greatly appreciated.
Thank you!

| To Whom It May Concern:
I want to express my deepest gratitude for your company to provide closed caption throughout the week following the news pretty well regarding the World Trade Center bombing and Pentagon wreckage and all of the follow up. I know it is not easy to have someone to caption all of the news last minute and up-to-date. I really appreciate your effort to make me and other deaf members in this community to be part of this experience and we were able to help. Please keep up the wonderful work! You are doing great! Smile!
Thank you.

| Thanks so much to you and every member of your team for providing, under very stressful and rushed conditions, the captioning that accompanied most coverage of last Tuesday's tragic events. Your efforts made it possible for the deaf and hard of hearing to function as fully informed citizens. Your efforts are appreciated by millions.

| Thank you so much, so we can enjoy watching programs now, the ones we so enjoy, TNT we do miss as we have no closed captioning on that, but thank you for your hard work for us deaf folks.

Thank you for providing captioning during the past week's terrorist attacks in DC and NY. Hearing Impaired persons everywhere are thankful that we can have access to the news when companies like yours come through with quality captioning. I am deaf with a cochlear implant. While I can now hear (after 28 years of deafness), I still rely on captioning to ensure I have understood correctly.

| Hi, my name is Rachel Hollis. I am from Oklahoma City. During May 3rd of 1999, we had a big tornado that hit the city. The Deaf people were not able to be informed due to the news not being captioned. We were all upset and felt left out of the community. Thanks to you all for the captions on all live news during this horrible event of America. We were able to be informed of what was going on in our country and feel like we are a big part of it.
Thank you again.

| Hello.
Thank you so much for typing the news at NY.
|
| To whom it concerns:
Thanks for the wonderful captioning services provided which helps us to follow the tragic events this week. I well remember when JFK died in 1963, I watched the news for four days and understood nothing. I had to depend on the newspaper or relatives to help me know what was going on. Having this captioning has been great!
Sincerely, Wayne Pittsburgh, PA

| Thank you for providing captioning at all hours of the day and night during this horrific time. We all greatly appreciate it. God Bless America.

| To Larry Goldberg, Tad Polumbus, Gene Chao, and Joe Karlantz:
Dear Fellow Captioning Organizers-Businesses...
Thanks you so much for providing captioning during this week's events related to the terrorist attacks in New York City and Washington, DC, on Channels 4, 5, 9, and 41 News in Kansas City, Mo., area. Your staff, all, showed professionalism and great commitment to accessibility. You know you have my great appreciation and gratitude from me, my family and friends.
In my own words, which are not enough, I am very grateful for captions on television! Without it, our Deaf lives would be very frustrating not knowing what is going on. Again, millions of thanks!
Sincerely and shalom, (Ms.) Arden Olathe, KS

| Dear Broadcasters and Captioners:
Thanks you so much for providing captioning during this week's events related to the terrorist attacks in New York City and Washington, DC, on our local TV Channels in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Your staff showed professionalism and great commitment to accessibility. You know you have my great appreciation and gratitude from me, my family and friends.
Now that I have your attention, I would like to express once again the need for 24-hour captioning. I am a bit disturbed that broadcasters are asking for this type of letters. Do you ask your hearing audience to send in letters thanking you for sound? I don't think so.
Quality of captioning is also important but not much attention is being paid to the quality of captioning that comes across the screen. If sound had the quality problems that is evident in captioning, you can bet it would be fixed immediately.
I noticed from my viewing that ABC seems to have the worst quality of captioning of the major networks. Captions on all broadcasters have quality issues, but ABC leads in this area. Captions are cut off, delayed or not displayed at all. It's like reading a book but getting only 30% of the story.
Please be proactive in ensuring that quality captioning is important to you as much as sound is.
With the technology we have today, this should be a no-brainer.
I DO THANK YOU ALL for the captioning. IT IS VERY much needed and appreciated! Just like sound is.
Sincerely, Andrew Alpharetta, GA and Sioux Falls, SD

| Dear Laura:
I want to thank you and everyone at Vitac, ABC, NBC, CBS, MSNBC, etc., for providing such constant and consistent captioning during all of these tragic hours.
You have my eternal gratitude for all of your Herculean efforts in working overtime and in overdrive to ensure that I, along with the entire deaf and hard of hearing community in America, can watch, understand and be included in the collective national grieving process.

| In the midst of the horrible tragedy, I commend Vitac for getting captions up and running so quickly and so well, especially with the local coverage from Channel 4. I recall the time a few years ago when USAir flight 427 went down just two miles from where we live. There were no captions of the local news reports then.

| Dear Heidi, ALDA-Peach's very favorite television captioner!
I don't know how much you have been involved in the events of today, but I suspect your fingers are ready to fall off. I hope you have a means to share our thanks with your colleagues. I know sometimes typing alone in your basement (in your jammies!) you feel you have no audience, but Heidi, it means so very much to us to have been able to follow the events of this very sad day. Please accept our appreciation.
